Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, looking after the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MOPSW) and AYUSH, virtually inaugurated “Ocean Grace”, 60T Bollard Pull Tug and Medical Mobile Unit (MMU) on March 2, 2024. Developed by Cochin Shipyard Limited under MoPSW, “Ocean Grace” is India’s first Advanced Ship Towing and Handling Tug (ASTDS) and marks a significant progress towards the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. The MMU, part of the port's corporate social responsibility, underlines its commitment towards community welfare.
“Ocean Grace”, built at a cost of Rs. Costing Rs 45 crore, the building is an epitome of marine engineering excellence with state-of-the-art technology and a remarkable 60 tonne bollard bridge. It aims to significantly enhance port operations in line with the Government's vision for maritime infrastructure excellence.
Additionally, the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP) seeks to convert 50% of all tugs into green tugs by 2030, in which JNPA, DPA, PPA and VOCPA will procure two battery-electric powered tugs from Cochin Shipyard by 2027. A commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve significant reductions in the coming decades.
Under the Marine Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, plans are underway to introduce state-of-the-art technology vessels including electric water taxis, hybrid electric ro-ro ferries and LNG electric cargo carriers. Additionally, this approach extends to deploying green hydrogen and ammonia-powered tugs at major ports, demonstrating a dedicated commitment to sustainable maritime practices and environmental stewardship.
In Odisha, the Sagarmala program promotes significant infrastructure development in coastal areas, with an investment of approximately Rs. 53 projects are included. Currently Rs 54,500 crore are in circulation. Notable projects include transforming the Paradip fishing port into a world-class facility and enhancing ferry services to improve local connectivity.
