Increase in India’s coal production and dispatch in May 2024


India's coal production in May 2024 stood at 83.91 million tonnes (provisional), showing a growth rate of 10.15 per cent as compared to 76.18 million tonnes during the same period last year. During the period, Coal India Limited (CIL) achieved coal production of 64.40 million tonnes (provisional), registering a growth of 7.46 per cent over the production of 59.93 million tonnes during the same period last year.

Further, coal production by captive and other entities stood at 13.78 million tonnes (provisional) in May 2024, showing a growth of 32.76 per cent over the previous year. Last year, the production of these entities was 10.38 million tonnes. Similarly, India's total coal dispatch for May 2024 stood at 90.84 million tonnes (provisional), which is 10.35 per cent higher than the same period last year. Last year this dispatch was recorded at 82.32 million tonnes. During May 2024, CIL dispatched 69.08 million tonnes (provisional) of coal, which shows a growth of 8.50 per cent compared to the dispatch of 63.67 million tonnes in the same period last year.

Further, coal dispatch by captive and other entities in May was recorded at 16 million tonnes (provisional), registering a growth of 29.33 per cent over the same period last year. Last year, dispatch by these entities stood at 12.37 million tonnes. The total stock of coal with coal companies is 96.48 million tonnes. CIL has a coal stock of 83.01 million tonnes, while captive and other companies have a coal stock of 8.28 million tonnes.
