Indian Railways Achieves Robust Growth in Freight and Passenger Operations in June

Indian Railways recorded a robust performance in June 2026, registering a 4 per cent year-on-year growth in freight loading and steady growth in passenger traffic over the corresponding month last year. The national transporter carried 137.56 million tonnes (MT) of freight during the month, compared to 132.27 MT in June 2025, reflecting sustained demand across key sectors.

Freight revenue also witnessed healthy growth, reaching ₹14,798.62 crore in June 2026, up from ₹14,094.73 crore in the same month last year. The increase was driven by higher movement of coal, iron ore, cement, foodgrains, fertilizers and other essential commodities, reinforcing Indian Railways’ role in supporting the country’s economic and industrial activities.

Passenger traffic also maintained a steady upward trend during the month. Indian Railways carried 64.06 crore passengers in June 2026, compared to 62.09 crore passengers in June 2025, registering a growth of around 3.2 per cent. Passenger revenue rose to ₹6,909.97 crore, reflecting continued growth in rail travel across suburban and non-suburban segments.

The Ministry of Railways said the improved operational performance reflects continued efforts to enhance capacity, improve service delivery and strengthen logistics efficiency. Ongoing infrastructure expansion, network upgrades and customer-centric initiatives have helped Indian Railways meet the growing demand for both freight transportation and passenger services.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to improving operational efficiency, expanding freight capacity and providing safe, reliable and affordable transportation while contributing to the country’s economic growth.
